Substance use impact differs by people’s sex, which merits looking at from a gender perspective. Scientific research shows faster progress towards developing substance use disorders in women. While women account for nearly one in three people worldwide who use drugs, only one in six cases in treatment are women. As for other psychoactive substances, cannabis use consequences are different for women, notoriously in populations with mental disorders. Women diagnosed with psychosis and are frequent cannabis users may face higher odds of metabolic syndrome, abdominal obesity, hypertension, and elevated triglyceride levels. Additionally, cannabis marketing targets women using misleading claims that influence the social perception of cannabis use.

To learn more about cannabis’s effects on women’s health, on Thursday, April 14, 2022, starting at 06:00 PM (Washington, DC time), join the “Women and Weed” 60-minute webinar hosted by the Pacific Southwest Addiction and Prevention Technology Transfer Centers.
