Survey & Nursing CE
Katherine Fornili, DNP, MPH, RN, CARN, FIAAN
Assistant Professor, University of Maryland School of Nursing (Retired), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Visiting Academic, Middlesex University, London UK
This is the first webinar in IntNSA’s new “Best Practice Tuesdays” series, scheduled to be held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 12-1pm (EST). Addictions nurses acknowledge a recent conceptual shift from a traditional focus on pathology and delivery of clinical interventions to a newer paradigm focused on sustained personal/family recovery. Failure to initiate and stabilize recovery is often viewed as the failure (or non-compliance) of the individual, rather than existing systematic access barriers and negative provider attitudes. This webinar provides an overview of recovery-oriented approaches that foster the development of therapeutic alliances and improve access and engagement.
Participants will be able to:
- Describe recovery, recovery management (RM) and recovery-oriented systems-of-care (ROSC)
- Demonstrate non-stigmatizing, non-labeling language
- Describe the need for welcoming environments
- Describe basic principles of trauma-informed care
- Recognize client resistance and principles of motivational enhancement
- Recognize strengths-based and relationship-building approaches
Dr. Katherine Fornili recently retired from the University of Maryland School of Nursing, where she co-developed an addictions nursing elective for undergraduates and a 12-credit addictions nursing certificate program for advanced practice nurses. She taught in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program; provided clinical instruction in community/public health with an addictions focus; and developed and delivered Interprofessional Education (IPE) in addictions for nurses, physicians, social workers, and other health professionals. She is a Past-President of IntNSA (2018-2020), and a Co-Editor of Addictions Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 3rd Edition (American Nurses Association and IntNSA, 2022).
