Overview for Addictions 101 Addiction is a treatable disease that claims about half a million deaths a year worldwide. Recent estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO) approximate that 270 million people (5.5% of global population) had used psychoactive substances and about 35 million people meet criteria for substance use disorders. This 3-hour beginner level workshop covers the foundations of addiction through didactic and case-base content. Structured in 30-minute mini sessions, it is designed to be interactive and introduces the participants to key concepts in treatment and management of addiction. Outline:

Marissa is an Assistant Professor at the Duke University School of Nursing. Dr. Abram has approximately 20 years of extensive clinical experience in the care of patients with addiction and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. She utilizes a trauma informed, harm reduction approach to personalize care and facilitate wellness. Dr. Abram’s research is focused on reducing inequities within addiction treatment. Her research seeks to close those gaps by developing interventions to improve health and facilitate recovery. As an educator, she is committed to preparing the future workforce to prevent, treat and manage addiction.
Adrian is an adult and mental health nurse practitioner and non-medical prescriber. He is currently a full-time academic .. He is the current president of the UK IntNSA chapter and the President-Elect of the Global Board of the International Nurses Society on Addictions. He is on the education committee for the Medical Council on Alcohol, where he promotes scientific advancement and SUD education in the healthcare curriculum. He has contributed to the National Clinical Guidelines for the treatment of alcoholic liver disease and the assessment and treatment interventions for alcohol use disorder.
Dana is an ANCC Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and an ANCB Certified Addictions Registered Nurse – Advanced Practice. She has been a member of the National Nurses Society on Addictions, formally changed to International Nurses Society on Addictions (IntNSA in 2000) since 1994. She served as the President of IntNSA from 2014 – 2016 and was instrumental in leading IntNSA to advocate that nurse practitioners prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorders. She has 6 years experience working in Medication Assisted Treatment programs, and over 20 years’ experience as an advanced practice psychiatric nurse working with patients who have co-occurring SUD and MH Disorders. |
