Ann M. Mitchell is a Professor of Nursing and Psychiatry in the Department of Health and Community Systems at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing and is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Addictions Nursing.

Ann M. Mitchell’s scholarly interests include mental health outcomes, bereavement following sudden, unnatural deaths specifically by suicide and overdose, and screening and brief interventions for alcohol and other drug use. Dr. Mitchell has served as the Project Director (PI) on two HRSA-funded grants designed to teach emergency department registered nurses the evidence-based practice of SBIRT and to teach inter-professional groups of anesthesia, nursing, and dental students how to assess and intervene with both patients and colleagues who may have at-risk alcohol or other drug use.

Previously, she has served as PI on a CDC-funded grant on FASD: Prevention through Partnerships and as Project Director on a SAMHSA-funded grant to integrate SBIRT into DNP curricula; while currently Dr. Mitchell serves as PD on a SAMHSA-funded grant to integrate medication-assisted treatment education in to NP curricula to prepare them for getting the DATA Waiver upon graduation. She is a certified clinical research coordinator (CCRC) through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) and provides consultation and education specific to research and evidence-based practices.

Dr. Mitchell also teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs including courses on psychiatric-mental health, contemporary issues in cross-cultural healthcare, and manuscript writing. She is also a certified advanced holistic nurse (AHN-BC) through the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) and provides consultation and education specific to holistic healthcare.

Dr. Mitchell received her RN diploma from the Southside Hospital School of Nursing, her BS and MS degrees from the Pennsylvania State University, and her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh.
