This course explores the correlation between substance use and cluster B personality disorders. The current state of the science is explored. Information regarding the unique challenges associated with treating these co-occurring disorders is provided. Treatment considerations and recommendations are reviewed. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Describe the Cluster B personality disorders. Consider the risk factors associated with disease expression and progression. Identify the correlation between personality and substance use disorders. Formulate treatment recommendations that are guided by the state of the science. Recognize the unique challenges associated with treating individuals with substance use and cluster B personality disorders. PRESENTERS Dr. Joanne Schwartz is a full-time faculty member who teaches in the psychiatric nurse practitioner program at Drexel University. She is an ANCC-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, an ANCB-certified advanced-practice addictions nurse, and a NLN-certified nurse educator. Dr. Kimberly Garcia is an assistant clinical professor of nursing and serves as the director of the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program at Drexel University. Dr. Garcia received her BSN (summa cum laude), MSN in nursing education, post-master's certificates in family and gerontological nurse practitioner studies, and post-master's certificate in transcultural and international nursing from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA.
