Description

Undetected or untreated problematic substance use and substance use disorders are associated with the onset or exacerbation of other, often life-threatening physical, psychiatric, and social conditions. Millions of people need but do not receive treatment.  Early intervention through screening, brief intervention, and referral (SBIRT) can minimize the harm and consequences associated with substance use and improve access to care. This webinar is based on the World Health Organization’s “Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test” (ASSIST), and the ASSIST-Linked Brief Intervention for Hazardous and Harmful Substance Use.

Learner Objectives

  1. Discuss screening using the World Health Organization’s "Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test" (ASSIST).
  2. Discuss the basic principles and skills of motivational interviewing necessary for communicating effectively with patients and delivering brief interventions.
  3. Describe how to utilize ASSIST-Linked Brief Intervention protocols for people with various levels of substance-related risks.
