Description

Approximately 25% of individuals who seek medical treatment in hospital care facilities have a problem that is directly or indirectly related to substance use disorder (SUD). The work of the addiction nurse in these situations is of utmost significance. Their contribution to the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and their advanced decision-making skills will enhance the provision of high-quality care for patients who are sometimes overlooked by other healthcare practitioners.

Learner Objectives

  1. Identify the role of the addictions nurse within tertiary care.
  2. Identify opportunities to support patients with SUD.
  3. Examine presenting complaints that could be attributed to SUD.

Presenter

Adrian Jugdoyal FIAAN, FHEA, FRSA, RGN, RMN, TCH, NMP Brunel University (London)
Adrian is a dual-qualified nurse prescriber and Programme Leader. He worked as an ACP in acute and emergency medicine, hepatology and addictions and has developed many nurse-led Addictions clinics. He has been involved in the development and implementation of national clinical guidelines for alcohol and opiate use care within the UK. Here's the only nursing representative in the medical council and alcohol Medical Council on Alcohol, He is also the president-elect (2024-2026) for the International Nurses Society on Addictions.
