Methadone is considered one of the most studied medications that we utilize today. It is also the most stigmatized medication by experts as well as lay people. How has SAMHSA changed the way methadone treatment is provided in 2024. In the mid 1960’s when Dole and Nyswander began utilizing methadone for the treatment of Heroin Addiction it was highly regulated and difficult to get. Today there are over 115 treatment programs in the state of Ohio and 2000 specialized programs in the United States. Since its use began in the 1960s, methadone is still the preferred choice of treatment at the clinics, and is often part of other protocols.
