Overview for Addictions 101

Addiction is a treatable disease that claims about half a million deaths a year worldwide. Recent estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO) approximate that 270 million people (5.5% of global population) had used psychoactive substances and about 35 million people meet criteria for  substance use disorders. 

This 3-hour beginner level workshop covers the foundations of addiction through didactic and case-base content. Structured in 30-minute mini sessions, it is designed to be interactive and introduces the participants to key concepts in treatment and management of addiction. 

Outline:

  • Session 1: Introduction to Addiction: Etiology, Clinical Manifestations
  • Session 2: Assessment of Addictive Disorders
  • Session 3: Introduction to Evidence Based Pharmacotherapy for Addictive Disorders: Opioids, Alcohol, Tobacco
  • BREAK
  • Session 4: Introduction to Evidence Based Behavioral Interventions for Addictive Disorders: Motivational Interviewing, SBIRT, Harm Reduction, Contingency Management
  • Session 5: Common Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorders
  • Session 6: Common Co-Occurring Physical Health Disorders

Objectives:

  1. Describe the neurobiological changes and clinical manifestations that occur with addiction.
  2. Conduct a substance use assessment using a biopsychosocial approach.
  3. Summarize evidence-based pharmacotherapy for opioids, alcohol, and tobacco. 
  4. Summarize appropriate behavioral interventions that are appropriate for specific stages the substance use/addiction continuum.
  5. Describe common mental and physical health disorders that co-occur with addiction.
